Extra: Knicks in Five?
I am a lifelong, avowed non-sports fan. I might watch the Super Bowl halftime show, but never the game itself.
World Series? No way.
And yet, despite myself, I found myself getting a kick out of the Knicks this year. Call me a Knicks neophyte. Something about this championship series and the surrounding mania got to me.
I wouldn’t say I was ecstatic about their win, but let’s go with glad. Engaged. Not disinterested.
That I cared about the NBA championships came as a complete shock to Janice, my sister-in-law. But guess what? Joe was cheering for the Knicks, too. Not what you'd expect from the so-called Killer Queens. Not from someone who spent his morning shopping for flowers and his afternoon browsing through Hermes clothing.
Maybe it’s because it had been so long since they last won. Maybe it’s because I lived in New York for a spell.
I’m not really into the kind of celebrities who sit on Celebrity Row. I turned on Timmy earlier this year. Ben Stiller? Spike Lee? Meh. So that wasn’t it.
Might I be changing in my old age? We’ll see. I doubt it.
Somewhere, my dad is smiling. He spent my childhood trying to turn me into a sports fan.
A cautious embrace of this victory is a start. A late one, but still a start.

Ditto! I wish I could explain what has come over me.
ReplyDeleteI watch almost every baseball game on my laptop, Peter. (still can't say their name) It's a connection to home. To me, it makes sense that you would connect to a NYC team, any team, really, while you were living there, you lucky dog. #ClevelandIndians
