Mr. Chicken

Our serenity hangs on a thread. That of a threadbare dog toy, to be precise.

When little Link, our Havanese bundle of joy, arrived in our household in January 2022, his Aunt Missy got him an assortment of toys to welcome him to the family. The heart wants what the heart wants, and Link was immediately attracted to a small cuddly cloth chicken. The two have been inseparable ever since. Love is love.

By turns, a snuggle buddy, therapist, playmate, and dog whisperer, Mr. Chicken is the go-to for any emotional twist or turn. At bedtime, Link must have Mr. Chicken in tow before he can settle down.

As Link's human nurturers and givers of all good things, Joe and I would like Link and Mr. Chicken to go on together indefinitely. They are good for each other.

And so it is with the potential for impending catastrophe that I report that Mr. Chicken is on the verge of being reduced to mere threads. At times filthy (though Joe tries to spot clean him), tattered, and showing bodily signs of hard living, I don’t know how much longer Mr. Chicken can go on without disintegrating into dust.

Link, who celebrated his third birthday on Monday, shows no awareness of Mr. Chicken’s precarious bodily condition. He continues to fling him into the air with abandon, forcing him to careen, slide, teeter, and ricochet off the wall. He roughhouses with him. He drops him from the bed and drags him by the mouth. With every passing day, we fear for Mr. Chicken’s longevity.

Top to bottom:
Xander, Link, Mr. Chicken
We were so concerned that we contacted the manufacturer to see if we could find a replacement. No such luck; he was discontinued during the pandemic. We have phoned stores, scoured eBay, and otherwise searched the globe only to find what we suspected all along: Mr. Chicken is irreplaceable.

Looking back, all of my canine companions had their toy companions. Beamer had Snoopy, Finnegan had Turkey Bone, but none of these was ever so tenuous as Link’s Mr. Chicken.

As you read this, hold your loved ones close and give them an extra hug. Do it for Mr. Chicken.

NOTE: Next week's post will be published whenever I can get online, as I will be en route to Maine for what will likely turn out to be a bloggable experience.
